Stem Bolt Sizing

Mountain bike and DJ stem bolts typically come in 2 different sizes. M6 are thicker, used in more heavy duty or older stems, and require a 5mm hex key. M5 bolts are the norm for most stems and are thinner, requiring a 4mm hex key. Use the pictures on this page to help determine which you've got.

INSTALLING YOUR BOLTS

Proper installation of your titanium bolts is crucial to ensure optimal performance. Depending on the application, that will require using either anti-seize or thread locker.

Liquid applications like anti-seize and thread locker reduce thread friction, which is what torque specifications are based on. This means when using these liquids, the torque specs of your stem need to be reduced to avoid over tensioning or stressing the bolt threads.

We take the guesswork out of this for you by including these instructions along with a small amount of the proper solution in your kit.

STEM BOLTS:

Using the toothpick provided, dab a tiny bit of anti-seize under the bolt head washer, and smear a thin amount of it along the bolt threads. It doesn't take much, so don't overdo it!

TORQUE SPECS:

Reduce torque specs by 25%.

For example, a Spec of 6Nm would become 4.5Nm (6 x 25% = 1.5, and 6 - 1.5 = 4.5).

ROTOR BOLTS:

Using the toothpick provided, stir up the thread locker, then dip the lower half of the bolt into the provided vial, slowly spinning it to cover the bolt threads with a thin layer of thread locker. (You do not need to add thread locker to the head of the bolt in this particular application.)

TORQUE SPECS:

Reduce torque specs by 20%.

For example, a Spec of 6Nm would become 4.8Nm (6 x 20% = 1.2, and 6 - 1.2 = 4.8).
